On March 17, 2026, Professor Huang Jinzhong, a distinguished tenor widely known as the “King of Western Songs,” was invited to Beijing Normal–Hong Kong Baptist University to deliver a vocal masterclass titled “How to Sing a Song Well.” The event, held in the University Concert Hall, attracted over 100 students and faculty members from the Music Department and other schools. The masterclass was highly engaging and well received, earning enthusiastic applause throughout.

Professor Huang is a Professor and Master’s Supervisor at the School of Music, Sichuan Normal University. He is also a National First-Class Performer and an acclaimed tenor, recognized for his long-term dedication to the preservation of Western Chinese folk music and vocal pedagogy. He has led projects funded by the National Arts Fund of China and received prestigious honors, including the top government award at the 9th National Broadcasting New Songs Competition. In 2023, he was named a “Leading Figure in Chinese Literature and Arts,” and in 2025, he was awarded the title of “International Peace Artist” by the United Nations World Intangible Cultural Heritage Protection Foundation.

During the masterclass, Professor Huang presented a comprehensive and accessible approach to vocal performance, combining clear explanations with live demonstrations and individual coaching. Drawing on his extensive stage and teaching experience, he guided students through key aspects of singing, including repertoire selection based on individual vocal characteristics, vocal technique, diction, and expressive interpretation. The session was both informative and inspiring, receiving warm responses from the audience.

At the end of the session, Professor Huang also answered questions from students regarding vocal training and learning strategies, followed by a group photo with participants.

The event was organized by the University and hosted by the Music Department of the School of Culture and Creativity, with strong support from relevant administrative units. As part of the department’s masterclass series for the semester, the event has made a meaningful contribution to enhancing students’ vocal skills and artistic expression.
