Associate Professor Jie Wang Delivers Special Lecture at Chongqing University “The Power of Imagination: Creative Insights from The Lion King”

On November 6, 2025, Associate Professor Wang Jie, Associate Head of the Music Department of Beijing Normal–Hong Kong Baptist University (BNBU), was invited by the School of Arts at Chongqing University to deliver a special lecture titled “The Power of Imagination: Creative Insights from The Lion King.”

The session took place at DYA203 on the Huxi Campus and was hosted by Mr. Yu Siyan, Associate Head of the Music Department at Chongqing University. The lecture attracted a full room of faculty members and students.

Exploring Stage Art Through The Lion King: Cross-Media Perspectives in Teaching

Using Disney’s The Lion King as a starting point, Wang Jie examined how performance, narrative structure, visual language, and musical elements work together in a stage production. She discussed the integrated use of puppetry, masks, lighting, and sound in establishing the storytelling world, highlighting how stage art communicates across cultural boundaries.

Wang Jie emphasized the central role of imagination and cross-media creativity in arts education. Drawing from teaching examples and her international experience, she presented the “body–voice–space” approach as a framework for fostering students’ expressive and creative abilities.

Interactive Demonstrations: Multiple Pathways in Music and Arts Learning

The lecture featured interactive activities including improvisation, vocal exploration, and physical expression, enabling students to experience the connection between musical expression and dramatic movement. The classroom was both engaging and focused, with students actively participating throughout.

Several faculty members from Chongqing University shared positive feedback afterward:

·“It’s rare to see students stay fully engaged without checking their phones—this shows how compelling the lecture was.”

·“The content was rich and inspiring, and directly useful for vocal and musical theatre teaching.”

·“A very meaningful session that offered new perspectives on the integration of music and theatre in our courses.”

These reflections highlight the lecture’s value in teaching methodology, classroom engagement, and artistic pedagogy. They also demonstrate how academic exchange between institutions can stimulate new ideas for music and performing arts education.

Strengthening Academic Exchange Between Institutions

This lecture provided Chongqing University students with a deeper understanding of musical theatre and creative arts education, while also contributing to meaningful academic exchange between the two institutions. Through sharing pedagogical insights and discussing curriculum development, both sides established a solid foundation for possible future collaboration in music, stage arts, and interdisciplinary practice.

Dialogue with Students

Following the talk, Wang Jie spoke with students, addressing questions related to vocal training, performance technique, and academic planning. Students expressed that they benefited greatly from the lecture and gained clearer direction in their artistic studies.
