From Classroom to Studio: Teaching Game Design for a Changing Industry

The games industry is changing quickly, and game education needs to change with it. Drawing on his experience in both professional game development and higher education, Philip Meredith explores how the habits of a working studio can be brought into the classroom.
The talk examines learning through making, iteration and collaboration, and how real-time tools such as Unreal Engine can give different disciplines a shared space to work together. It also considers the value of industry mentors, live briefs and external projects in helping students develop a clearer understanding of professional expectations.
The aim is to give students strong foundations, together with the confidence and independence to experiment, collaborate and develop work that prepares them for an industry that will continue to evolve.
