[THEM Event Review] No Referral, No Problem: Ms. Hou Linxian Shares Her Path into Fortune 500 and Beyond

On the afternoon of April 15, 2026, Ms. Hou Linxian, Senior HR Manager at TCL PV Tech, was invited by the Tourism, Hospitality and Event Management (THEM) programme at Beijing Normal-Hong Kong Baptist University (BNBU) to deliver a career development talk at CC-326, titled "No Referral, No Problem: How to Break into a Fortune 500 Company." The session covered three core themes: breaking into the job market, building professional networks, and developing a winning workplace mindset.

Ms. Hou opened with a personal story of showing up uninvited to a Fortune 500 interview after being eliminated in the final round. She spent the night restructuring her answers using the P&G Eight Questions and the STAR method, returned the next day to negotiate her way in, and walked out with an offer. She encouraged students to take initiative, reminding them that sincerity and preparation are the most powerful tools in any job search.

On the topic of networking and career planning, Ms. Hou introduced a practical framework for building professional connections, alongside the Career Development (CD) Model rooted in the Minnesota Theory of Work Adjustment. Centred on the concept of exchange, the model draws on four dimensions: individual ability, individual needs, job requirements, and workplace rewards, helping individuals assess both career fit and personal satisfaction to make more informed career decisions.

Drawing from her own journey from postgraduate student to Fortune 500 management, Ms. Hou shared three core mindset principles: consistent accumulation, adaptability, and lifelong learning. She encouraged students to think long-term, reminding them that steady persistence outweighs short-term wins, and to make use of every tool available without being defined by it.

Each segment included an open Q&A, with students engaging actively throughout. The talk offered practical insights and thought-provoking perspectives on career development, reflecting the THEM programme's commitment to equipping students with the skills and mindset for professional success.

Ms. Hou holds degrees from Minzu University of China and the University of Edinburgh, and currently serves as Senior HR Manager at TCL PV Tech. She is a National Certified Career Planner and ACI Certified International Professional Trainer, with over eight years of HR experience in Fortune 500 companies.
