Some children are taken by the river before they ever get a chance to be held. The river water is cold, nothing like an embrace; it is silent, and no one says to them, "Don't be afraid." They are those newborn baby girls abandoned at birth. No names, no cries, not even a single lamp lit for them in the night. The river never turns anyone away — it only gently carries them into the distance. It is not cruelty, but a sorrow that cannot be spoken. The girls embraced by the river — that embrace is too light, too cold, like a sigh that no one ever hears.
