MAFTNM Alumni Achievement-Class of 2023-WANG Junping

I am WANG Junping from the Class of 2023 of the MA in Communication program-- Film, TV & New Media Concentration (FTNM), School of Culture and Creativity.

After completing my undergraduate studies, I crossed over from film and television production to the producing field, which I found more interesting. In that short year, I left behind many beautiful memories at BNBU, which nourished my inner self like spring rain moistening a dry riverbed.

Here, I first encountered a group of outstanding teachers. Not only do they possess deep expertise and cutting-edge perspectives in their professional fields, but they also show no airs in front of students, generously sharing their experiences and thoughts, and encouraging us to interact, practice, and speak boldly. The passionate debates in law class, the installation production in media art, and the impromptu performances everywhere in directing practice all shattered the previous impression that class equals suffering. They made me feel the openness, inclusiveness, and unique innovation of liberal arts education.

Secondly, I made many like-minded friends. Since most coursework required group collaboration, all of us became extroverts, working together to produce satisfying assignments. Sometimes we held group meetings until 1 or 2 a.m., sometimes we argued for half a day over two lines of reasoning, sometimes we ran all over Zhuhai to shoot a project, and we even did amazing things like revising a PPT by the seaside for a presentation, or sitting around in a quiet bar as a group to work out accounting problems. As a result, even after graduation and going our separate ways, we still remember each other, stay in close touch, and often get together.

Beyond that, there is so much more: the continuous stream of professional seminars and discussion sessions, opportunities for close contact with industry big names, all kinds of performances so popular that we couldn't get tickets and had to sit in the stairwells to watch, campus events held every few days, a dozen elective whole-person education courses we could freely audit, company visits to well-known enterprises every semester, and enriching overseas study tours. Not to mention the patient and gentle teaching assistants who helped us answer every question, the warm and friendly dormitory aunties who decorated the dormitories beautifully during the holidays, the mischievous cat master and the elegant goose senior interacting with us lovingly… I often wonder whether this place is a school or a paradise — otherwise, how could time pass so quickly?

After graduation, I have been to many places and engaged in different jobs — journalist, advertising, film and television. In all of these, I applied the professional knowledge and insights I gained at school, which also gave me more confidence and ease in the workplace. Whenever I look back, I firmly believe that choosing BNBU was the right decision. It not only gave me rich intellectual tools and mental wealth, but also, through its warm humanistic care, endowed me with the strength to grow and explore. Toward my alma mater, beyond praise, I feel mostly gratitude and reluctant attachment. I have returned to school twice this year. Seeing that everything seems unchanged, and that the underclassmen are as full of energy as we once were, I cannot help but feel many emotions. Once again, thank you to the school for everything. I sincerely wish that BNBU continues to improve, that its future is as splendid as flowers, and that it nurtures outstanding students far and wide.
